ALL INDIA TOP 10 SCHOOLS
"RECENT SURVEYS TELLING THAT THREE SCHOOLS BANGALORE HAS BEEN CHOOSEN AS THE BEST SCHOOLS IN INDIA"
When it comes to a perception of schools across the country, it’s the old and traditional institutions that have topped the charts. Mumbai’s Cathedral and John Connon School bagged the No 1 slot in a nationwide perception survey of day schools in the country, conducted by EducationWorld, a Bangalore-based publication, and market research agency C-Fore. Cathedral beat The Sri Ram School, Delhi, which was numero uno last year.
Two other Mumbai schools made it to the top 10 ranks in the survey: Campion School (Rank 4) and Bombay Scottish (Rank 6). Day schools that ranked No 1 for areas such as academics, like DPS RK Puram (Delhi), did not fare well in the overall rankings.
Rishi Valley School, Chitoor, an alternative centre for learning based on the ideas of the philosopher J Krishnamurti, shared the top slot for boarding schools with The Doon School, Dehradun. And Kodaikanal International School was No 1 in the international school category.
Over 2,000 parents, principals, teachers and educationists in 16 cities across India were asked to rate 400 well-known schools in India for the survey. The parameters included academic reputation, sports and infrastructure, amongst other things. “We are certainly the most sought-after schools. Every teacher in the school puts in a tremendous effort to do a great job in the classroom. That Cathedral has ranked No 1 is a source of great pride for us, but it’s a also a great responsibility. It means we must work very hard to remain No 1,” said Amba Mugwe, a teacher at Cathedral.
“The ranking is well-deserved. Cathedral is a very solid school,” said a former head-girl at Cathedral, whose child now studies in junior school. According to Kanan Kapadia, a parent at Cathedral, the institution has great vision and has gone a long way in broadening the minds of its pupils.
The rankings do, however, have their share of critics, like Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal of Jamnabai Narsee School. “The schools surveyed have not been visited during the rankings. It’s a perception survey, and so there is no scientific basis for the study. Schools that are doing well should not be demoralised by such a survey,” she adds. There are also some parents who are not completely satisfied with Cathedral. A class-X parent felt that students were going through undue stress and weren’t enjoying themselves enough. Meanwhile, a former student of Rishi Valley School, Chitoor, says the ‘prestigious’ institution, located on 350 acres of fertile land, provided students with a very different environment for studies when compared to regular schools in cities.
