TECHNOLOGY IN YOUR HANDS
"THIS IS A GREAT NEWS FOR ALL THE STUDENTS, WHAT IT IS?,NOW THE STUDENTS CAN WRITE THEIR EXAMS WITH YOUR MOBILE PHONES".
Hello! Students can now answer their question paper on mobile phones. And teachers can mark their attendance on that too. This is what the Seshadripuram First Grade College, Yelahanka, told its students and teachers this year.
When schools and colleges across the country are against the use of mobile phones in classrooms, this college has come out with an out-of-the-box concept where students and teachers are allowed to use mobile phones.
Called ‘Interactive Platform On Mobile (IPOMO)’, the college provides handsets (a common model) to the students and teachers, where games and messaging options are disabled. Instructions are given to students and teachers on using the handset. After the respective tasks are done, the handsets are returned to the college.
Started as pilot project for BBM and BCA courses last year, it proved successful prompting the college to extend it to other courses too. “The idea is to use technology in providing quality education,’’ M Prakash, principal, told TOI. “When we started the pilot project, students were curious. Moreover, it’s quicker and copying is not possible in this technology,’’ he added.
To appear for a test, four answer options are given for each question and students will have to enter the correct answer. At the end of the test, students can revise the answers and then click on the ‘submit’ option. Answers will be recorded in the server and marks will be consolidated. For a three-hour test, 120 questions are given. Students can also do the calculation using the calculator provided in the handset. As for attendance, if a student continuously absents for three days, then an SMS is sent to the parents’ number. Now, ‘Present madam’ marked on cellphone
Marking attendance on a cellphone. Seshadripuram First Grade College, Yelahanka, has introduced this.
How is it done? The teacher will be given a password. Once the teacher enters the password, he/she will get courses—section—subject. After this series, names of the students’ list is displayed. After the attendance is taken, that has to be the first 15 minutes, data will be automatically entered in the server. If a student is continuously absent for three days, then the name of candidate will be highlighted in the server. Class teacher will check the attendance of all subjects and the student’s name that is highlighted, and an SMS will be sent to the parents’ number.
“The response is good. The moment parents receive the SMS on student’s attendance or performance, they immediately contact us. Moreover, any teacher can show the attendance as the entire college database of 3,000 will be in the phone,’’ principal M Prakash said.
TEACHER TALK
Consolidating marks,
marking attendance are so
much simpler with this latest technology. Also, a lot of time is saved, which can be used for teaching. Previously, we would sometime wait till the end of class hours to mark attendance but now students know they cannot afford to be late as the attendance is recorded within first 15 minutes. — Neha Jain | ENGLISH
TEACHER STUDENT’S TAKE
When one of the teachers entered the class with the mobile phone, we thought it was her mobile. Then, she informed us that the attendance would be marked through the phone. She said if there were regular absentees, then the information would be sent to their parents. We write our tests on phone. I find it easy to operate. There is no scope for malpractice as the questions are jumbled. — Shruthi Babu | 5TH SEMESTER, BBM
